The Old Mill Tea Garden restaurant was founded by Robert Home Smith in 1914, next to the ruins of an old grist mill on the Humber River. It was part of the Kingsway residential development by Smith. Over the ensuing decades, 16 banquet rooms were added.

A mill is a device that breaks solid materials into smaller pieces by grinding, crushing, or cutting. Such comminution is an important unit operation in many processes. There are many different types of mills and many types of materials processed in them.
In 1973, the Foster’s son Don and his wife, Beth, joined in the operation of the Old Mill , and in 2004 their son Jay became general manager and chef. Today it is still a family affair, run by Don, Beth and Jay. 2019 will mark their 73rd year as owners of the Old Mill , making it 98 years as a restaurant.
The Old Mill’s story began nearly two centuries ago when local farmers with sacks of grain traveled to the newly built gristmill along the Little Pigeon River. Today, the Old Mill is one of the oldest continually operating gristmills in the country and one of the most photographed mills in America.
A Grist Mill is Where Grains are Ground In simple terms, it is a mill where grains are ground. The word “ grist ” meant cereal grains to early settlers. The earliest grist mills in America were built in the early 1600s. But the grinding of grain goes back centuries before that.
The name Pigeon Forge comes from an iron forge built around 1820 by local business man Isaac Love, who named it after the Little Pigeon River where it was located on (which was itself named after the passenger pigeons that frequented its banks).
As restaurants and retail establishments have been allowed to reopen across most of Tennessee this week, the City of Gatlinburg is taking safety precautions to ensure the safety of residents, visitors and employees. The Gatlinburg Community Center and City Parks reopen on May 18 as part of a phased reopening.
