GRADE A: The restaurant is clean, up to code, and free of violations. GRADE B : The restaurant has some issues that must be fixed. GRADE C: The restaurant is a public risk and on verge of closure.
Grade pending means that the restaurant got either a B or a C. The restaurant can contest the grade , and while it’s waiting for a hearing, it can post the grade it received or the “ Grade Pending ” sign. You can look up the restaurant’s pending score online.
Overview. The basic idea is for restaurants to be inspected at least once a year by the state. Based on the inspection, the restaurants will be given a letter grade that represents how sanitary the restaurant enviornment is.
The Department of Public Health inspects retail food facilities which receive a letter grade or a score according to their inspection score . Their website provides an easy-to-use search tool to locate the letter grade and score of any facility in Los Angeles County.
But most B graded restaurants are still very good. Many of my favorite restaurants have a food safety B grade. Unfortunately, just a few food safety violations can lead to a B grade but it doesn’t mean there is an increased risk of food borne illness. The FDA Food Code identifies 56 different inspection items.

Critical violations are violations that pose a high risk to food safety and would likely cause foodborne illness, like improper handwashing or holding of food .
Three stars
Every restaurant in New York City is scheduled for an unannounced inspection at least once a year. During the inspection , an inspector checks for compliance with city and state food safety regulations and marks points for any condition that violates these rules.
A ” 5 star restaurant ” comes from the star rating system that’s used in determining the quality of a restaurant . 5 stars indicates it is an excellent restaurant , 4 stars a very good restaurant , 3 stars a good restaurant , 2 stars a fair restaurant , 1 star an ok restaurant worthy of mention.
A perfect score is 100. For states and counties that use the letter- grade system, a 90-to-100 point score is an A, 80 to 89 is a B and so forth. Some cities and states require the restaurant to prominently display its most recent grade .
The health inspector will meticulously check cooking, holding and storage temperatures of all meat, poultry, seafood and ready made food products to assure they are at safe temperatures.

It’s important to recognize that a C -graded restaurant is deemed safe and sanitary enough to serve the public. If the restaurant was not safe to serve the public, the health department would shut it down.
This study—and many others before it—found that eating at fast- food restaurants and full-service restaurants is worse for you than eating at home. Both types of establishments were associated with a daily increase in calories, fat, saturated fat and sodium.
